What a .p7m file is

A .p7m file is a document with a digital signature in CAdES format (the PKCS#7/CMS standard). The original document — often a PDF — is wrapped together with the signature and the signer’s certificate, which is why the name ends with a double extension, like contract.pdf.p7m.

Double-clicking it usually leaves Windows confused. This tool opens it, pulls out the real document and shows you who signed it.

p7m vs p7s

CAdES signatures come in two forms:

  • .p7m — attached signature: the document is inside the file. The most common case, and the one this tool opens.
  • .p7s — detached signature: only the signature, with the document travelling separately. Both files are needed to verify.

Is the signature valid? What it means

The optional verification checks that the signature matches the document (not altered) and reads the signer’s certificate and its expiry.

Note: it is not a legal validation. Full legal value requires checking against the accredited trust lists (AgID/eIDAS) and revocation, which are beyond this tool. Use official signature software or accredited services for that.

Where .p7m files come from

You typically receive them via certified email (PEC) or as signed attachments: contracts, invoices, legal documents, public-administration files, tenders. The signature guarantees who produced them and that they were not changed.

Because the CAs of Italian qualified providers are often not in the server’s standard bundle. It does not mean the signature is invalid: qualified validation is done with accredited software.
